TOP QUESTIONS
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST MASSAGE SESSION?
First, I will take a brief life and medical history from you. All information is considered strictly confidential. We will explore whatever issue has brought you to this type of treatment. You may then be asked to lie on the massage table and will be covered with a sheet or blanket. A stethoscope may be placed on your lower abdomen. It is important to be aware that this is not a 'passive' treatment; I will ask you (many times!) to bring your awareness to what you notice during the session. This is an essential part of the work.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST TREATMENT?
Biodynamic Massage Therapy does involve some gentle physical movement, and can be done either fully or partly-clothed, so loose-fitting clothing is recommended. (A singlet, vest, or t-shirt and loose sweats, shorts or trackies are perfect!) You will also be covered to your chest or shoulders with a blanket or sheet, depending on the weather. Great care will be taken to ensure you feel safe at all times.
WHY DON'T YOU USE OIL IN BIODYNAMIC MASSAGE THERAPY?
Biodynamic Massage Therapy is all about developing attunement and connection: to our emotions, to our bodies, to the therapist. Skin-to-skin contact is considered an important part of this process, so no oil is used that might distract from the impact of this type of touch. Many of the techniques used are less about sliding across the surface of skin and muscle, and more about making direct contact with each layer of tissue, from skin all the way down to bone level.
CAN I COME JUST FOR ONE SESSION?
A single session can be beneficial on its own and you are very welcome to come try it out. Most clients find that lasting changes in body/mind/spirit come through the deeper work that happens in multiple sessions over a longer time period. Because Biodynamic Massage works with the body AND mind together, it is important to commit to the work and have a 'safe space' in which to follow up and explore the feelings and sensations that can arise through the work. It can sometimes also take a couple of sessions for the client to become accustomed to 'listening' to their bodies in a biodynamic sense. We regularly review the process together. This will be discussed in greater depth at your first session.
