WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST SESSION?
For biodynamic massage therapy, first I will take a brief life and medical history from you. All information is considered strictly confidential. We will explore whatever issue has brought you to this type of treatment. You will be asked to lie on the massage table (or floor mat, for Integrative Guidance) and will be covered with a sheet or blanket. A stethoscope will be placed on your lower abdomen (for biodynamic massage). Listening to your digestion may seem a bit strange at first, but most clients find it quite interesting and rather humourous! The first session can feel more exploratory than subsequent sessions, as the therapist and client both attune to the client's physical and emotional states.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST TREATMENT?
Treatments do involve some gentle physical movement, and can be done either fully or partly-clothed, so loose-fitting clothing is recommended. (A singlet, vest, or t-shirt and loose sweats, shorts or trackies are perfect!) You will also be covered to your chest or shoulders with a blanket or sheet, depending on the weather.
WHY DON'T YOU USE OIL DURING THE MASSAGE?
Biodynamic massage therapy is all about connection: to ourselves, to our bodies, to the therapist. Skin-to-skin contact is considered an important part of this connection, so no oil is used that would diminish the impact of this type of touch. Many of the techniques used are less about sliding across the surface of skin and muscle, and more about making direct contact with each layer of tissue, from skin all the way down to bone level.
DO YOU HELP TREAT TERMINAL OR CHRONIC ILLNESS?
Although it is not a replacement for any standard medical care you might be receiving, biodynamic massage therapy and Integrative Guidance can be very helpful as an adjunct treatment in cases of chronic or terminal illness, even while having radiotherapy or chemotherapy. In situations that can feel very distressing, it is entirely possible for healing (if not cure) to happen. Please feel free to contact me to discuss your situation.
WHY DO YOU RECOMMEND SIX SESSIONS TO START WITH?
Although a single session can be beneficial, most clients find that lasting changes come through the deeper work that begins after a few sessions. Because Biodynamic Massage is psychotherapeutic in nature, it is important to have a 'safe space' in which to explore the feelings and sensations that sometimes arise through the work. A set number of weekly sessions can be helpful in supporting this, and can be extended if desired. This can be discussed at your first session.
